FG Declares August 25 Public Holiday for Eid ul-Mawlid
The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a nationwide public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul-Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
The declaration was announced on Friday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government. The announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
The Federal Government extended its greetings to Muslims across Nigeria and in the diaspora, urging Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the values associated with the life and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, particularly compassion, humility and service to humanity.
Tunji-Ojo also called on Nigerians to embrace peace, unity and responsible conduct during the celebration, stressing the importance of these values to national development.
The Minister urged Muslim faithful to use the occasion for prayers and reflection while encouraging all Nigerians to promote peaceful coexistence irrespective of religious or ethnic differences.
The declaration means public institutions and offices covered by the federal public holiday will observe Tuesday, August 25, as a work-free day.
The Federal Government also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace across the country during the celebration.
