VIDEO: Chaos in Benue as Suspected Thugs Attack Peter Obi’s Convoy

Newslens NG reports that there was tension in parts of Benue State on Tuesday after suspected thugs allegedly attacked the convoy of former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

The incident reportedly occurred during Obi’s visit to the state, with the suspected attackers allegedly blocking a major road and creating a chaotic situation as the politician’s convoy attempted to pass through the area.

Details surrounding the incident were still emerging as of press time, while the identities and motives of those behind the alleged attack had yet to be officially established.

The development has heightened concerns over security and political activities in Benue, a state that has in recent months witnessed recurring incidents of violence and insecurity.

Obi has consistently spoken out against insecurity in Benue and other parts of the North-Central region, calling on governments at all levels to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve rapid-response capabilities and protect vulnerable communities.

In August, the former Anambra governor visited communities affected by deadly attacks in Benue State, including Otukpo-Nobi and Efeyi-Ugboju in Otukpo Local Government Area. During the visit, he called on the Federal Government to demonstrate greater commitment to protecting lives and property.

He had also described the worsening insecurity in Benue, Plateau and Niger states as a national security emergency, urging authorities to take proactive measures to prevent further attacks and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.

The latest incident comes against the backdrop of continuing security concerns in Benue, where security forces have sustained operations against criminal elements.

On September 2, troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE reportedly encountered suspected bandits along the Gbise–Igyudu Road in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of the state. One suspect was reportedly neutralised during the encounter, while another fled. Weapons and ammunition were recovered from the scene.

The alleged attack on Obi’s convoy has therefore raised fresh questions about the safety of political figures and other citizens travelling through parts of the state.

However, it remains unclear whether the reported incident was politically motivated or connected to any broader security threat.

Security authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible, while residents have been urged to remain calm and avoid actions capable of further escalating tension.

The incident also underscores the need for stronger security coordination and intelligence-driven policing, particularly around the movement of political leaders and other public figures in areas experiencing heightened security challenges.
