Ayra Starr Opens Up On Money, Power In Relationship
Newslens NG reports that Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has sparked reactions online after revealing that she would have greater control in a relationship if she were financially richer than her partner.
The “Rush” crooner made the statement while discussing relationships, money and financial responsibilities during an appearance on the Wahala podcast.
Ayra Starr explained that if she dated a man who was financially less wealthy than her, her stronger financial position would give her more influence over the relationship.
According to the singer, she would still expect such a partner to fulfil his financial responsibilities and provide for her, despite earning less than she does.
She also revealed that she would not disclose the full extent of her wealth to a partner who earns less than her.
“If I date a man who I am richer than, I will control him. But even if I am richer, he will still be providing, and I won’t let him know I have a lot of money,” she said.
The comment has since generated conversations on social media, with Nigerians debating whether financial superiority should give either partner greater control in a relationship.
While some may view her position as a reflection of traditional expectations surrounding men as providers, others have questioned the idea of deliberately concealing one’s financial status from a partner.
The singer’s remarks have also revived wider discussions about money, power and gender roles in modern relationships, particularly in situations where a woman earns significantly more than her male partner.
