Tanzania President Samia Suluhu’s Husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, Dies

Newslens NG reports that Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the country’s First Gentleman, has died while receiving treatment in Zanzibar.

Hafidh’s death was announced on Monday, September 7, 2026, by Tanzania’s Vice President, Deogratius Ndejembi.

According to the Vice President, the President’s husband died at about 8:00 a.m. at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he had been receiving treatment for a heart condition.

Ndejembi expressed condolences to President Samia, the deceased’s family, relatives and friends, as well as the people of Tanzania, following the death.

He also disclosed that arrangements were already underway for Hafidh’s burial in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.

Hafidh, who largely maintained a low public profile, became Tanzania’s First Gentleman after his wife assumed office as the country’s first female President in March 2021, following the death of President John Magufuli.

Unlike many spouses of African heads of state, Hafidh rarely appeared in the political spotlight and was only occasionally seen accompanying President Samia at official functions.

He was an agricultural academic and had been married to Samia since 1978, long before her rise to the presidency. The couple had four children — three sons and a daughter.

Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, is also involved in politics and serves in Zanzibar’s House of Representatives.

The death has triggered condolences from leaders across Africa.

Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his sympathy to President Samia and her family, describing Hafidh as a lifelong companion to the Tanzanian leader, a beloved father and a distinguished son of Tanzania.

“Kenya stands with our Tanzanian brothers and sisters in this moment of grief,” Ruto said while praying for comfort and strength for President Samia and her family.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, also conveyed his condolences to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania, expressing wishes for strength and comfort during the difficult period.

Further details on the funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by Tanzanian authorities.
