Glo Skillbridge Empowers Lagos Street Sweepers with Vocational, Digital Skills
In a groundbreaking move to uplift and empower essential workers, the Glo Foundation has launched the first phase of its Glo Skillbridge programme, aimed at equipping Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) street sweepers with valuable soft and vocational skills.
The initiative, which commenced last week across various training centers in Lagos, is tailored to provide new income-generating opportunities for LAWMA staff. Currently, 150 sweepers are undergoing intensive four-week training in Fashion Designing, Bead Making, Baking, and Digital Skills.
The Glo Skillbridge programme was first announced during a special event celebrating LAWMA workers, with a clear focus on economic empowerment and bridging financial gaps through skill acquisition.
Speaking on the programme’s progress, the Glo Foundation expressed satisfaction with the commitment of both trainers and participants. It praised the trainees for their enthusiasm and dedication to learning, noting that the acquired skills would open doors to additional income sources.
At Yetroslane Fashion Academy in Gbagada, which hosts the fashion and bead-making classes, a lively learning atmosphere was observed. Some participants were already creating their own beads within just three days of training. Beneficiaries such as Amusat Mopelola Airat and Liadi Fatimoh expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Glo Foundation and LAWMA for what they described as a life-changing opportunity.
Similar excitement was recorded at the Bakery Initiatives in Yaba, where sweepers are being trained in baking. LAWMA Supervisor, Mrs. Busari Adebanke Busayo, who also joined the training, remarked on its value, saying, “It will be of huge benefit to me and my family. I’ve learned how to measure and weigh flour for various baking products, among other skills.”
In Costain, Ikorodu-based trainee Mr. Williams Oladipupo commended the digital skills training conducted at ALX, stating it would benefit his business and also help his children learn coding. Twenty-two-year-old Miss Udoh Blessing Endurance Francis highlighted the relevance of digital literacy in today’s fast-paced world.
The four-week training programme is scheduled to conclude in July, with participants expected to graduate with practical skills that can significantly improve their livelihoods.
