Tim Cook Steps Down as Apple CEO After 15 Years, John Ternus Takes Over
Newslens NG reports that Tim Cook has officially stepped down as the Chief Executive Officer of Apple after nearly 15 years at the helm, bringing an end to one of the most significant leadership eras in the technology company’s history.
Cook, who succeeded Apple co-founder Steve Jobs as CEO in August 2011, officially handed over the reins to John Ternus on September 1, 2026. Ternus, formerly Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, now becomes the company’s new chief executive, marking Apple’s first CEO transition in 15 years.
Although stepping down as CEO, Cook is not leaving Apple. He has assumed the position of Executive Chairman of the company’s Board of Directors and will continue to assist with certain aspects of Apple’s operations, including engagement with policymakers around the world.
The leadership transition was announced earlier this year and was unanimously approved by Apple’s Board of Directors following what the company described as a long-term succession planning process. Cook worked closely with Ternus during the summer to ensure a smooth handover.
Cook leaves behind a remarkable legacy. During his tenure, Apple expanded dramatically, introducing and growing major product categories including the Apple Watch, AirPods and Apple Vision Pro, while significantly expanding its services business. The company also transitioned the Mac from Intel processors to its own Apple silicon chips.
Under Cook’s leadership, Apple’s market value rose from about $350 billion when he took over to more than $4.5 trillion, cementing its position as one of the world’s most valuable companies.
Ternus, a longtime Apple executive who joined the company in 2001, takes charge at a critical period for the technology giant. He has played key roles in the development of major Apple products, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPods, and was also closely involved in Apple’s transition to Apple silicon.
However, the new CEO faces significant challenges, particularly as Apple seeks to strengthen its position in artificial intelligence amid intense competition from other technology companies. Supply-chain diversification, geopolitical tensions and regulatory pressures are also expected to feature prominently during Ternus’s tenure.
The transition ushers in a new chapter for Apple, with Ternus expected to face immediate scrutiny as he leads the company into its next phase while Cook remains closely connected to the business as Executive Chairman.
