In a chat with Fortune, the party starter spoke on his sojourn to the entertainment industry and his upcoming afrobeat mixtape, captioned “DETTY DECEMBER HYPE MIXTAPE” set to be released in December to the delight of his fans.

Unlike most entertainers DJ Ability has claimed that his journey through to the entertainment industry has been a smooth wave, this confession came when he was asked how he became OOU number 1 Disc Jockey of the year 2021, he said “it has not been an easy ride for me. We all know every journey starts with a step. My career started when I got pre-degree admission into Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye (OOU). Back in 2016. I had passion for DJing and worked towards achieving my goal.

He was introduced to DJ Spearz who was one of the top DJs in the school then, who trained him for a while before he met with his senior back in secondary school (DJ Jonzing) who put him through the rudiments of DJing and he became better.
“Ever since then I’ve been putting more efforts to make sure I’m on the map” he said.

Supports from parents

The story of many entertainers is that they don’t get that support from their family but in DJ Ability’s case it seems different he got optimum supports from his parents. His Dad also paid his training fees although Ability had paid before the news broke to his dad that his only son was a DJ.

[Chuckles] “well I got massive supports from my mum, maybe because I’m mummy’s pet, although I’m the last child of 4 and only boy. As for my dad he didn’t know about it, until my friends disclosed it to him. So, one day he called me and asked if I had passion for anything that would be fetching me money while in school”. By the way Ability said he had passion of being an entertainer ever since his secondary school days, he backed this up by saying he was a school dancer, drummer boy and he also sings a times.
“I didn’t want to lie to him so I told him. He gave me #15,000 to pay for the tutorials, although I had paid earlier. The support was massive from them”.

Quitting Music, Challenges

On quitting singing, Ability made it clear that he was not good at singing so he quitted.
Ability career has been an easy ride for the past 4 years and counting. Here is what he has to say “for me it has been quite an easy ride. The only issue I was having was on instruments but there was always a provision for it. It was God all through, I have mentors and friends who cater for all I need in an event”.

He believes being an entertainer and a student is not a challenge, he said “if other entertainers in school could cope, why then shouldn’t I”.

DJs accolades
Ability expressed his dissatisfaction with inequality in the industry, he believes every entertainer has equal right as the DJs, artiste, comedians etc. “(sighs) Disc Jockeys in Nigeria deserves more accolades”. He added “they help in promoting and putting the content of the artiste to the global scene and yet they aren’t given accolades due to them. DJs and artiste complement each other and I think they should be given equal attention in terms of awards and recognition”.
Collaborations and projects
“For now, I don’t have any collaboration yet, but I’m working on that, I will be dropping a mixtape this December “DETTY DECEMBER HYPE MIXTAPE” probably before the year runs out, I’ll be expecting a collab with Hideez “the jollof crooner” and next year would be a banger, working on three EP Mixtapes”.
