Newslens NG reports that, The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the successful completion of the first phase of a polio vaccination campaign in Gaza. Over 600,000 children under the age of five were vaccinated to combat a recent polio outbreak in the region. This joint effort, in collaboration with the Palestinian Ministry of Health, UNICEF, and other health partners, aims to boost immunity among vulnerable populations in the conflict-affected area. The campaign’s success marks a significant step in preventing further transmission of the poliovirus.

The campaign was launched after the detection of poliovirus in sewage samples in Gaza earlier in 2024. With fears of a potential outbreak, the international health community swiftly coordinated to ensure comprehensive coverage. Health workers visited homes, health centers, and schools, ensuring all eligible children were vaccinated despite the challenging circumstances.

Newslens NG gathered that, Dr. Ahmed Al-Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, expressed his gratitude to all those involved, emphasizing the importance of timely responses to health crises. “Ensuring the protection of children, especially in conflict areas, is a priority,” he said.

This first phase of vaccination has laid the groundwork for future immunization efforts, with plans for additional phases to further bolster Gaza’s immunity levels. WHO officials stress that continued efforts will be critical in completely eradicating polio in the region.

This campaign also highlights the importance of international cooperation in addressing public health issues in vulnerable regions. As Gaza recovers from the recent health scare, the focus will remain on long-term strategies for maintaining polio-free status.
