Court grants business woman divorce over lack of peace

A Grade I Area Court in Kubwa, Abuja, has dissolved a one-year marriage between a businesswoman, Nafisat Mohammed, and her estranged husband, Salisu Isah, on grounds of lack of peace.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the judge, Mr Yahaya Sheshi, dissolved the marriage according to Islamic law following N Mohammed’s prayer to the court for divorce.

Sheshi had earlier ordered Isah, who sent a letter to the court regarding the divorce, to appear in person and prove his claims, but he did not honour the invitation.

The judge ordered Mohammed to take an oath of affirmation that the bride price paid was N15,000 since the defendant refused to appear in court.

Earlier, the petitioner told the court that she married the respondent under Islamic law but had not been in peace with him.

“My life is in danger; the respondent’s wife has threatened me. I pray the court to grant my wish because I am living in fear of the unknown, ” Mohammed said.

In response, the respondent sent a letter to the court due to ill health through his brother, stating that his marriage to the petitioner lasted from March 30, 2019, to May 28, 2020.

According to him, his family summoned him alongside her parents, demanding to know why the petitioner was seen hovering around men she was not related to.
