Oyo State Governor and presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has pledged to serve only one four-year term if elected President of Nigeria in the 2027 general election, promising to establish an inclusive government focused on national unity and addressing the country’s major challenges.

Makinde made the pledge on Saturday, October 10, 2026, during the APM North-East Zonal Town Hall Meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, where he presented his vision for a transitional Government of National Unity.

“Our government will not last beyond four years. And it will be an all-inclusive government,” the governor said.

According to reports, Makinde explained that his proposed administration would prioritise national unity, security, poverty reduction and practical solutions to the economic challenges confronting Nigerians.

He said his administration would be guided by honesty, public consultation and a willingness to listen to citizens, regardless of their political affiliations or positions in government.

The APM candidate also pledged to avoid politicising issues affecting citizens’ welfare, insisting that solutions to Nigeria’s problems could come from people outside government.

Makinde’s promise comes amid growing political discussions ahead of the 2027 general election, particularly over Nigeria’s informal power-sharing arrangement between the northern and southern regions.

His position also mirrors the one-term pledge made by the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, who has similarly promised to serve for four years if elected president.

Meanwhile, Makinde criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, accusing it of failing to fulfil some of its campaign promises, particularly in the power sector.

He challenged the Federal Government to publish its petroleum pricing template to enable Nigerians to understand how the prices of petroleum products are determined.

The governor also faulted the government’s policies on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), electric vehicles and the naira-for-crude initiative, arguing that Nigerians needed practical measures capable of easing the cost-of-living crisis.

He maintained that the country required transparency, effective planning and broader public participation to address its economic and security challenges.

Makinde further called on Nigerians to support a political reset in 2027, describing the forthcoming election as an opportunity to pursue a different approach to governance.

The APM national leader and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, also expressed support for Makinde’s presidential ambition, describing the party as a platform committed to national unity, inclusiveness and providing opportunities for Nigerians across different regions.

The party’s vice-presidential candidate, Lawal Daura, similarly expressed confidence in the party’s proposed agenda, saying it was determined to deliver measurable improvements in the lives of Nigerians.

As political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, Makinde’s four-year pledge adds to the emerging debate over presidential tenure, regional representation and the policy direction candidates intend to pursue if elected.
