Newslens NG reports that chelsea are set to complete one of the most surprising transfers of the summer after reaching an agreement to sign former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson on a free transfer.

The 36-year-old England international has agreed a two-year contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until June 2028 after mutually terminating his contract with Premier League side Brentford. The move, first reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano with his trademark “Here we go” announcement, is expected to be officially concluded this week.

Henderson only joined Brentford in 2025 after ending his spell at Ajax, bringing leadership and experience to the Bees. During the 2025/26 season, he featured regularly, making more than 30 appearances while contributing with a goal and several assists. However, both parties agreed to part ways, paving the way for an unexpected switch to Chelsea.

The move represents a significant shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy. After several seasons focused on signing young talents, the Blues have now turned to experienced Premier League campaigners to provide leadership in the dressing room. Reports indicate that new manager Xabi Alonso views Henderson’s winning mentality and vast experience as valuable assets for a relatively youthful squad.

Henderson enjoyed a glittering 12-year spell at Liverpool, captaining the Reds to numerous major honours, including the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and EFL Cup. He later had brief spells with Al-Ettifaq and Ajax before returning to the Premier League with Brentford.

The experienced midfielder is also expected to continue playing a role with the England national team, where his leadership has remained highly valued.

Chelsea supporters have expressed mixed reactions to the impending signing, with some questioning the veteran’s age, while others believe his leadership qualities could prove crucial as the club seeks to return to competing for major honours.

An official announcement from Chelsea is expected once the remaining formalities, including the signing of contracts, are completed.
