One Dead as Suspected Hoodlums Attack Oriyomi Hamzat’s Supporters in Ibadan
One person has been confirmed dead following an attack on supporters of Accord Party governorship candidate in Oyo State, Oriyomi Hamzat, during a procession in Ibadan.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, when the supporters, who had gathered to welcome Hamzat back to the country from the United Kingdom, were reportedly attacked by suspected hoodlums in the Molete area of Ibadan.
According to the Oyo State Police Command, the group came under attack shortly after leaving Molete while proceeding towards Iwo Road, where the headquarters of Agidigbo FM, owned by Hamzat, is located.
The deceased was identified as 40-year-old Azeez Tajudeen, a native of Oke Amu in Itesiwaju Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Police said Tajudeen sustained a severe injury to his right eye during the incident and was rushed to the State Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan, where he was confirmed dead.
His remains have since been deposited at the hospital morgue.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has directed the Command Monitoring Unit to investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The command also appealed to members of the public with credible information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
The police urged political aspirants, party leaders and event organisers to notify the command at least 48 hours before planned processions and public gatherings to enable adequate security arrangements and prevent a breakdown of law and order.
The attack has raised fresh concerns about the safety of political supporters and the need for political actors to discourage violence as activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
The identities of the attackers and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain subjects of police investigation.
