Wike Explains Why Fubara Will Not Contest 2027 Governorship Election

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that the political crisis which engulfed Rivers State has effectively ended Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s chances of seeking a second term in the 2027 governorship election.

Wike made the assertion during the August edition of his monthly media chat, where he reflected on the prolonged political rift between him and his former political ally, Governor Fubara.

According to the former Rivers State governor, Fubara’s political misfortunes stemmed from what he described as poor advice from some of the governor’s associates, as well as the influence of external forces allegedly seeking to control the political structure of Rivers State.

Wike maintained that the crisis, which led to months of political uncertainty in the state, ultimately denied Fubara the opportunity to pursue another term in office.

He argued that had the governor listened to sound political counsel and remained committed to existing political understandings, the situation might have unfolded differently.

The FCT Minister also criticised some political actors around Fubara, accusing them of misleading the governor and escalating tensions that deepened the crisis in Rivers State.

The relationship between Wike and Fubara deteriorated shortly after the latter assumed office as governor, triggering a fierce power struggle that polarised the state’s political landscape and drew national attention.

While Governor Fubara has yet to publicly respond to Wike’s latest remarks, the comments are expected to reignite political debate ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
