…Ondo Police launch wider probe as suspect confesses to multi-million naira travel scam

Newslens NG reports that the Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old woman, Adejoke Ayomide, over her alleged involvement in a visa fraud scheme that reportedly defrauded more than 90 prospective travellers of ₦42.3 million.

The Command said the suspect allegedly collected the money from victims under the pretext of securing travel visas to Spain, Portugal, and France, but failed to deliver on her promises.

According to the Police, the arrest followed a petition dated July 17, 2026, filed by Barrister Akindayomi Oluwa Tobi & Associates, alleging that the suspect fraudulently obtained money from several victims between October 2024 and April 5, 2026.

Investigations revealed that Ayomide, a resident of Adesoye Street, Abeokuta, Ogun State, allegedly posed as a travel consultant and convinced victims that she could facilitate their relocation to Europe.

The victims reportedly entrusted her with processing travel documents for over 93 intending travellers, paying a cumulative sum of ₦42,326,000 into her Opay account for the purported visa processing.
Police said the suspect allegedly went into hiding after receiving the funds, forcing the victims to seek the intervention of law enforcement authorities.

Following the petition, detectives of the Ondo State Police Command launched an intelligence-driven investigation, employing forensic and technological tools to track the suspect.

The operation eventually led to her arrest on August 5, 2026, during a coordinated operation by detectives of the Command.
Police disclosed that the suspect has made useful statements while in custody, adding that investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the alleged fraud, identify possible accomplices, and establish whether more victims may have been affected.
The Command stated that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Commending the officers involved in the operation, the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, CP Felix Ohagwu, praised their professionalism and dedication, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to tackling financial crimes and ensuring offenders face the full weight of the law.

The Police also urged Nigerians to exercise caution when dealing with travel agents and visa consultants, advising prospective travellers to verify the authenticity of agencies before making payments and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
