One Dead, Three Injured as Lexus SUV Crashes on Lagos Coastal Road
One person has been killed while three others sustained serious injuries after a Lexus SUV crashed along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road in Lagos.
The accident occurred on Friday along the Coastal Road, inward Eko Hotel, when a grey Lexus Jeep 350 with registration number LSD 554 KV reportedly lost control, crashed into a roadside pole and overturned.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq.
According to the agency, its operatives monitoring traffic around the area swiftly moved to the scene after receiving information about the crash and secured the affected section of the road.
Three injured victims were reportedly rescued from the wreckage with the assistance of Good Samaritans and taken to Duck-Yard Hospital within the Military Zone for urgent medical treatment.
Security personnel from Victoria Island also assisted at the scene, while LASTMA officials subsequently removed the wrecked vehicle from the carriageway to prevent a secondary accident and restore the free flow of traffic.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise greater caution while using Lagos roads.
He warned that excessive speeding, reckless driving and loss of control could have fatal consequences for motorists and other road users.
The accident has renewed concerns over road safety on the Lagos section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, particularly following previous warnings by authorities over excessive speeding on the route.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olufemi Dare, had previously raised concerns that some motorists were driving at speeds of about 120km/h on the road despite the prescribed 30km/h speed limit.
LASTMA also urged motorists and members of the public to promptly report road crashes, broken-down vehicles, obstructions and other emergencies through its toll-free short code 3367 for immediate intervention.
