EPINMI AKOKO: A COMMUNITY REAWAKENED, ON PATH OF RENEWAL UNDER OBA AYODELE IDRIS
BY: ADENIYI ADESUYI
Nestled in the scenic landscape of Akoko South East Local Government Area of Ondo State, Epinmi Akoko is a community steeped in history, culture and excellence. For generations, the town has distinguished itself through its rich Yoruba heritage, educational legacy and the remarkable achievements of its sons and daughters in diverse fields of human endeavour.
Today, Epinmi is experiencing a renewed wave of progress under the leadership of His Royal Majesty, Oba Ayodele Idris, the Gbirimojo of Epinmi Kingdom, whose reign has been defined by purposeful leadership, inclusiveness and an unwavering commitment to community development.
From the outset, the monarch made it clear that the palace would not merely serve as a symbol of tradition but as a catalyst for development. His administration has focused on mobilising Epinmi indigenes, friends of the community and development partners towards a common vision of building a safer, stronger and more prosperous kingdom.
One of the hallmarks of Oba Idris’ reign has been his deliberate efforts to strengthen the security architecture of the community. Understanding that peace remains the foundation upon which development thrives, the monarch has personally supported local security operations through the regular payment of security personnel engaged in safeguarding the community. Beyond this, he has procured essential security equipment and other operational tools to improve efficiency.
To further enhance rapid response and surveillance, the monarch also donated two motorcycles to the local security outfit, enabling security operatives to patrol difficult terrains and respond promptly to emergencies. These interventions have significantly boosted community policing and reinforced residents’ confidence in the safety of Epinmi.
Education has also remained close to the monarch’s heart. Recognising the importance of quality learning in shaping future generations, Oba Ayodele Idris has consistently demonstrated his commitment to the education sector through the payment of the salary of a PTA employed teacher at Obahoho, ensuring that pupils continue to receive quality instruction despite staffing challenges.
Beyond education and security, the monarch has placed great emphasis on developing infrastructure that will serve both present and future generations. Among the landmark projects initiated during his reign is the proposed Royal Palace and Recreation Centre, which has become a major focus of discussions during the last two editions of Epinmi Day. The project is envisioned as a modern cultural and recreational complex that will preserve the rich heritage of the kingdom while providing a befitting venue for community meetings, youth activities, cultural exhibitions, sporting events and tourism.
The annual Epinmi Day celebration itself has undergone remarkable transformation under Oba Idris’ leadership. Determined to make the event more attractive and impactful, the monarch introduced a road race competition into the celebration. This innovation has added excitement to the festival while promoting healthy living, youth participation and community bonding. It has also enhanced the profile of Epinmi Day, attracting wider participation from indigenes, visitors and friends of the community.
The king’s commitment to the welfare of his people extends beyond physical infrastructure. In a remarkable display of compassion and social responsibility, Oba Ayodele Idris has institutionalised annual palliative support for vulnerable members of the community. During the last two December festive seasons, the palace distributed bags of rice and bags of salt to families in need, helping to ease the burden of the Yuletide season and ensuring that many households celebrated with joy and dignity.
His inclusive leadership has also been evident in his unwavering support for religious harmony. During the holy month of Ramadan, the monarch has consistently extended support to the Muslim faithful by providing welfare packages and other assistance to facilitate their fasting and prayers. This thoughtful gesture has further strengthened the peaceful coexistence among adherents of different faiths in Epinmi.
Perhaps one of the defining characteristics of Oba Ayodele Idris’ reign is his ability to unite people around a shared vision for development. He has actively reached out to accomplished sons and daughters of Epinmi, both at home and in the diaspora, encouraging them to invest their expertise, influence and resources in the advancement of their ancestral home. His leadership has inspired renewed confidence among indigenes, many of whom are now showing greater interest in contributing to the growth and transformation of the community.
This vision was further reinforced through the historic visit of the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, to Epinmi. Beyond its cultural significance, the visit reflected the monarch’s determination to build strategic partnerships capable of promoting cultural renaissance, tourism, youth empowerment and sustainable community development. The visit also projected Epinmi onto a wider cultural stage and strengthened its ties with respected Yoruba leaders.
Under Oba Ayodele Idris, the palace has become a centre for dialogue, collaboration and innovation. The monarch has consistently engaged professionals, entrepreneurs, political leaders, traditional institutions and development partners, believing that the transformation of Epinmi can only be achieved through collective responsibility.
As Epinmi continues its journey of renewal, the achievements recorded so far provide compelling evidence of a monarch who is determined to leave a lasting legacy.
Through investments in security, education, social welfare, infrastructure, cultural preservation and strategic partnerships, Oba Ayodele Idris has demonstrated that traditional leadership remains a powerful instrument for grassroots development.
With sustained unity, visionary leadership and the continued support of its illustrious sons and daughters, Epinmi Akoko stands on the threshold of a brighter future, one where tradition, innovation and development work together to build a thriving community for generations to come.
