King Kosoko Royal Family unveils programmes to mark 163rd anniversary of King Kosoko’s triumphant return in 1862

Newslens NG reports that the King Kosoko Royal Family of Lagos under the leadership of Olori-Ebi General, Alhaja Mutiat Alli – Balogun  has announced a schedule of programmes to commemorate the historical return of King Kosoko to Lagos in 1862 which makes it the third edition of its kind.

This Nigeria news platform reports that Prince Abiola Kosoko, the Oloja of Lagos Elect, revealed the details during a press conference held at the King Kosoko Palace, Ereko, Lagos, on Tuesday. The festivities will commence on September 8 and conclude on September 16, 2024.

Newslens NG reports that during the briefing, the T-shirt for the arrival light parade and the Ankara fabric for the grand finale were unveiled. “This week-long ceremony, scheduled from September 8th to 16th, 2024, commemorates the historic return of King Kosoko and his followers to Lagos in 1862. This return led to the founding of the settlement known as Epetedo and the establishment of the Ereko Palace,” said Prince Kosoko.

The King Kosoko Memorial Lecture will kick off the events on September 8 at Glover Hall, Lagos, where a book and the family anthem will be unveiled. An interdenominational traditional prayer will take place on September 10 at the King Kosoko Palace, Ereko, followed by Jumat Prayers on September 13 at the Lagos Central Mosque. A thanksgiving service will be held at the Ereko Methodist Church on September 15.

The arrival light parade is set for the evening of September 15 at the King Kosoko Palace, with the grand finale scheduled for September 16 at the same venue.

Prince Kosoko emphasized that the family aims to preserve the legacy of King Kosoko through this celebration, which also serves to foster unity, create awareness, and promote tourism. “The Return 1862 is a celebration of our rich cultural heritage and a tribute to the legacy of King Kosoko and his followers, who played a significant role in shaping the history of Lagos. This event aims to promote cultural awareness, unity, and tourism while showcasing the traditions and customs of the Lagos people,” he stated.

Prince Kosoko noted that “The Return 1862” is unique in bringing together indigenous people from all five divisions of Lagos. “We have invited dignitaries from across the country, including traditional rulers, government officials, and cultural enthusiasts, to join us in celebrating this significant aspect of our cultural history,” he added.

He further highlighted that “The Return 1862” is not just a celebration but also an opportunity to reflect on the past, appreciate the present, and shape the future. “We believe that this event will foster unity, promote cultural exchange, and contribute to the economic development of Lagos,” he said.
