How Gani Fawehinmi exposed Tinubu’s lies, fakery & forgery 24 years ago (Documents)

Prior to the expose by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 presidential election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, of the fraud/forgery perpetrated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Chicago State University, the late legal icon, Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, had exposed multiple lies by Tinubu 24 years ago in 1999.

This was contained in a publication by Newswatch Magazine on the fraudulent education qualification claims by Tinubu.

The publication was derived from the request of late Fawehinmi to the police wherein he requested the authorities to investigate Tinubu over fraudulent education qualification claims when he contested Lagos State governorship election in 1999.

The publication juxtaposed Tinubu’s education qualification claims versus the verified facts available as follows:

The publication went ahead and published a complete list of attendees of Government College Ibadan in 1965 with Tinubu’s name apparently and obviously missing, as follows:

Commenting on Tinubu’s education qualification claims, including his purported degree of the Chicago State University, Newswatch reported:

“A dependable source told Newswatch last Wednesday that Tinubu did not and could not have attended any college in America between 1969 and 1971 because he travelled to America for the first time in 1974.

“”He purportedly spent two years 1969/71 in Richard Daley College but if he attended Government College or any other secondary school prior to Richard Daley, what could he have achieved in only two years of secondary education? Anyway, he was in Nigeria in 1969-1974,” he said.”

“Despite the pressure mounted on Tinubu to resign, there was growing optimism in his camp last week that he would soon put his travails behind him. That perhaps, explains why a planned press conference which Tinubu was to address on Monday or Tuesday was suddenly called off.

“It was strongly believed Tinubu would have used that forum to reply Fawehinmi in view of the seven-day ultimatum the Lagos lawyer gave him to produce genuine original copies of his educational certificates or their certified duplicate copies.

“The ultimatum expired last Monday without any reply from Tinubu. In keeping with his threat, Fawehinmi proceeded to the next phase of his crusade to kick Tinubu out of office.

“On September 21, he addressed a 10-page petition to the inspector-general of police giving him 14 days to investigate allegations of perjury and forgery levelled against the governor and make the report public.

“What Fawehinmi wants the police to investigate are Tinubu’s claims that he attended Government College, Ibadan, between 1965 and 1968 and Richard Daley College, Chicago, Illinois, between 1969 and 1971.

“And if he did attend any of the two colleges, the qualifications he used to gain admission into the University of Chicago and Chicago State University.

“He also wants the police to investigate Tinubu’s claim that he attended both universities between 1972 and 1979 as recorded in his sworn affidavit on both certificates and INEC Form CF001.

“He argued that if Tinubu’s claims are found to be false, the police should then prosecute him under sections 191 and 192 of Criminal Code, Cap 32 Laws of Lagos State 1994.

“Fawehinmi insisted that if Tinubu was unable to produce the original copies or certified duplicates of his secondary school leaving certificate as evidence of his admission to and graduation from Government College, Ibadan, crucial questions would surface.

“Such questions, he said, would be: “Which qualifying documents did the governor present to the University of Chicago to entitle turn to be admitted thereto if ever?”

Newswatch included in the report Tinubu’s purported National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) service year, call-up number, state code number, state of deployment and place of primary assignment, all of which are believed to be fake.

Reasons being that the name on his NYSC documents read “Bola Adekunle Tinubu”, instead of “Bola Ahmed Tinubu”.

Curiously, Fawehinmi mysteriously died suddenly before he could pursue the investigation to its logical conclusion.

Little wonder that Atiku Abubakar, during a press conference he held on Thursday, paid a glowing tribute to the late Chief Fawehinmi.

He said: “I wish to pay tribute to the late human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, who inspired us on this path of discovery. Now, he can truly rest in peace in the assurance that what he started about 23 years ago has come to fruition.

“Gani’s vindication today gives credence to the saying that no matter how fast a lie runs, the truth will someday overtake it,” he added.

Meanwhile, the former vice president had, on October 5, submitted details of his findings at the Chicago State University (CSU) to the Supreme Court of Nigeria, along with his appeal against the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) judgement over its ruling on his petition challenging Tinubu’s victory at the presidential election.
